Empowering and uniting people around common goals

HULI was created to build capacity for our Hawai‘i-based activists and movements by providing trainings around organizing, nonviolent direct action, and movement-building for people in Hawai‘i. Our objective is to empower our community to struggle smarter, harder, and for as long as it takes to win.

HULI (Hawaii Unity & Liberation Institute) provides nonviolent direct action (NVDA) training and action support for the Hawaiian community. Our theory of change is: Recognize. Organize. Analyze. Exercise.

Aloha kākou, today is Lā 150. This means that for nearly 5 months, we have protected Maunakea from the destruction of construction. Weʻve done so through a kūpuna blockade and through the establishment of Pu'uhonua o Pu'uhuluhulu Maunakea. None of this would have been possible were it not for the outpouring of support that has come from the lāhui Hawaiʻi, from our relatives around the world and from all of our allies.

This short film, Like A Mighty Wave, was created by Mikey Inouye, local boy and filmmaker who is a part of the immense talent that makes up our Mauna media team. The film captures the transformative impact that the sacrifice of our kūpuna on July 17th has had in Hawaiʻi - an impact that reverberates throughout the globe. Mahalo nui loa Mikey Inouye and the many members of the Mauna media team who helped capture this pivotal moment in history.

The film was spotlighted at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival in November. Mikey is now making it available to the public as a fundraiser for HULI to help ensure that this movement remains strong at every level. The film is free and accessible to all but we ask that as you take in the emotion and beauty of the movement captured in this film, that you also make a donation through HULIʻs action network page (provided in the link at the top of this post).

Aloha ʻāina and Kū Kiaʻi Mauna!
